Architekturtheorie.eu – Forschungsmittel in Höhe von 260.000 Euro bewilligt
Die Abteilung Architekturtheorie des Instituts für Architekturtheorie und Baugeschichte der Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck blickt auf ein erfolgreiches Arbeitsjahr 2012 zurück, in dem vor allem größere wissenschaftliche Vorhaben besonderen Rückenwind bekommen haben. Für die Durchführung mehrerer Forschungsprojekte wurden Förderungsmittel in einer Höhe bewilligt, durch die eine Fokussierung der Forschungstätigkeit von architekturtheorie.eu unter der Leitung von Univ.-Prof. Ir. Bart Lootsma in den nächsten zwei Jahren auf folgende Schwerpunkte ermöglicht wird:
"Die schlafende Schöne – Biopolitik und Architektur" und "The Invisible City. Migration und Architektur" unter der Projektleitung von Univ. Ass. Dr. MMag Peter Volgger,
"Musch & Lun. Architekten, Entrepreneure und Politiker der Gründerzeit in Südtirol" unter der Projektleitung von Priv.-Doz. Dr. phil. Bettina Schlorhaufer,
"Leopold Gerstel – Architekt, Professor, Humanist" unter der Projektleitung von Univ.-Ass. Dipl. Arch. Mathieu Wellner.

THE POLITICS OF DIGITAL ARCHITECTURE:
COMPLEXITY, RESPONSIBILTY AND THE PRODUCTION OF SPACE

To address the hegemony of digital calculus and its architectural meaning by the question of politics, there is a thought raised in Antoine Picon’s “Digital Culture in Architecture”, one of challenging the impact, achievement and consequences produced and generated by “digital architecture”. Conversely, such a discussion is one of asking what ideas and visions evolve through “digital architecture”, what does it provoke and leave behind? And indeed, architecture in the digital age falls far short of asking these questions. As opposed to consider what effects and results are being produced, novel techniques of visualization were following an inspiration from materialist philosophy and various sciences that allowed for a new aesthetical repertoire to liquidate Modernism’s uniformity and the ambiguity of the Post-Modernist doctrine. Addressing the digital age in architecture by the question of politics, however, involves a thorough discussion of complexity, responsibility and the production of space, evolving from and within a specific practice of digital architecture. In this, the critical dialogue The Politics of Digital Architecture: Complexity, Responsibility and the Production of Space aims to intensify the discourse on the contexts, influences, and legacies of architecture in the digital age in order to foster a broader understanding and less ideological thought that stimulates digital potentials to be covered by both responsibility and the consequences they initiate.

Nigel Bertram established NMBW Architecture Studio in Melbourne with Marika Neustupny and Lucinda McLean in 1997. Their architectural work continuing since that time has been widely published and awarded. Nigel worked as design architect for Coelacanth K & H Architects in Tokyo before taking up a position in the Architecture Program at RMIT University in 2000. He is currently director of the Urban Architecture Laboratory research unit at RMIT, and in 2010 completed his PhD through architectural project. In 2006 he was joint-creative director of the Australian Pavilion at the 10th Venice Architecture Biennale. Nigel’s research and practice explores contemporary relationships between architecture, infrastructure and landscape; the creative and opportunistic everyday use of urban environments, and the influence of local building practices and traditions.

In the summer semester 2011, the Institute for Architectural Theory and Building History of Innsbruck University organizes an exceptional program entitled Matchpoint.Innsbruck which consists of a design studio for Master students and an accompanying research, both in cooperation with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia (RMIT).
The overall title of the project “Matchpoint” is derived from a Diploma project by Thomas Fussenegger called Matchpoint.Melbourne. His thesis analysed Melbourne as the city that is most strongly influenced by sports and the leisure industry in the world. In conjunction with a complementary research project Fussenegger's thesis was exhibited at RMIT in summer 2010.
Consequently, Matchpoint.Innsbruck guarantees a comprehensive engagement with Innsbruck as a sporting city. Moreover, special emphasis will be placed on historical, urban, sociological, landscape, economical and last but not least architectural aspects. The results of the project will be published by RMIT in a book.

In the summer semester 2011, the institute for architectural theory and building history of Innsbruck University organizes an exceptional design studio for Master students in cooperation with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).
The project is part of the exchange program with RMIT. Six exchange students from RMIT will take part in the courses. Matchpoint.Innsbruck is open for a selected group of Students of the University of Innsbruck. The results of this project will be published by RMIT in a book.

Diploma Thomas Fussenegger: Matchpoint Melbourne
On March 13th, Thomas Fussenegger took his degree from the Leopold Franzens University with a study of Melbourne. His thesis is that cities have always tried to provide their residents with the best possible urban environment. Due to the growing importance of leisure industry and tourism, cities such as Melbourne are more and more forced to compete for becoming hot spots on the world map. Through a comprehensive analysis of the city it is shown how sport and design have become synonymous for Melbourne's local culture and could simultaneously attract worldwide attention. Independently, Thomas Fussenegger developed underutilised sites throughout the inner city. Thereby, sport, identity, branding, experiential design, and public space turned out as the key issues. New cognitions gave rise to a comprehensive concept for Melbourne's urban thinking and planning. The proposed concept shows how architecture can be utilized to combine local and global aspects of city making in order to service social integration and economic growth. A series of individually developed architectural interventions provides an idea on how the overall concept could become part of each project in a different way. Thereby, the inner city of Melbourne becomes the urban playing field. [more]
